(This post is excerpted from a story in the Sept. 26 issue of Local/State Funding Report.) Although reductions in federal grants have been capturing many of the headlines, they are not the only hardships that nonprofit organizations currently face. According to a recent report from the Foundation Center, state cutbacks are directly affecting nonprofit organizations that depend on state government grants for part or all of their funding.

The report surveyed foundation leaders about the challenges they are facing and how they are responding to various fiscal crises. Ninety-five percent of the foundation leaders participating in the survey said that at least some of their grantees were affected by state budget cuts, and 58 percent that “most” or “all” of their grantees were impacted.
