(This post is an excerpt of a story that appears in the Oct. 31 issue of Local/State Funding Report.) As the country’s economic woes continue, experts are increasingly advising grantseekers to seek alternate sources of funding. Foundations and philanthropic organizations will be an important source for many mission-based organizations as the landscape continues to shift.

According to Bradford Smith, president and chief executive officer of the Foundation Center, five trends are shaping the future of philanthropy: philanthropy is growing, philanthropy is a global industry, philanthropy is more than giving, the digital transformation is changing everything and transparency is inevitable and good.

Smith gave the opening keynote at the early October annual conference of the Grant Professionals Association in Las Vegas.
